WakeUtah.com Featured Rider (Sept) D.F.T.R. Josh

Posted on 10 September 2008 by omj

Featured Rider For September is D.F.T.R. Josh

I had the opportunity to go riding with Josh on one of his Monday sessions, watching him ride and landing his moves, it was like watching someone ride who is just barely learning a new trick.  He got a big old grin after each trick, you can tell this guy just loves to ride!  If you have been around the sport for a while you have seen him, you might not have known but you have.  He’s the one at the boat show helping set up, helping tear down, hanging out and having a good time with the people he’s around.  Josh spends much of his time hanging out at the wakeworld.com forums, meeting people in the area and arranging rides behind different boats, with different crews.  He’s also got some mad awesome video editing skills.  Josh is an asset to the wake boarding community, if you get the chance to go on one of his Monday sessions, or any session, it’s going to be good times!
Josh has been helping WakeUtah.com in many ways, providing Trex for the Seven Peaks Rail Jam, we used his Jet Skis for the Delta Rail Jam.  If you see him out on the water, tell him thanks for all that he has done for the community in Utah.
Check out his site www.downfortheride.com

WakeUtah.com Featured Rider (Sept) D.F.T.R. Josh

Name – D.F.T.R. Josh
Age – 29 yrs young
Sponsors – Hyperlite Wakeboards, Liquid Force Bindings, Jet Pilot, Straight Line, Pro Tech Helments, Billabong, Bullet Lines, Oneal, Wakeutah.com, Wakeworld.com, Natural light.. Not really, these are the company’s that I support from buying and using their products to posting on their forums!
Board Set Up – 2006 Hyperlite Parks/2007 Roam while 2008 CT Shanes sit on top.
Hobbies other than wake sports – Video, Film, Internet, Basketball, Harley’s, My kids!
Biggest Accomplishments – My first pull behind an Inboard! I learned my first 2 inverts beind a 24′ Cuddy with no tower. It was a whole new program behind an Inboard with Ballast
Goals this Season – W2W HS Indy BS 180. Huge thanks to Ryan Shima for the pull and patience up at Willard till I finally stuck the landing.
Favorite Pro and Local Riders – Pro – Mark Kenny (RIP) The kid is the greatest. 2nd Randall Harris, this guy makes a Stailfish to BS 180 into the flats an art form. Local – Everybody I ride with, I got friends that can barely clear the wake to others going huge. I will shout a huge thanks to David H, Ryan D, Ryan S, E.J., Jim, Dewey (god I’m sounding like a boat whore), Mike, Shane, Wayne and anybody I missed with a boat that has gave not only myself but my family time on the water.
Favorite Trick to watch and perform – Any new trick landed for the first time. For some reason nothing else matters when you land that fist trick and your still on your board. Fist time I landed the BS 180 W2W I threw the handle and put my arms in the air like it was my fist trick ever landed.
About wakeboarding? There is nothing like pulling up to the lake and not a ripple in the water. It’s a sport that not only you can hang out with your friends but your family also can join in. My dad was on the boat for my first invert and I think he was happier than I was. It’s a sport that takes you to your limits till you succeed and push the limits even farther. Then somebody with a tube comes in and F’s up you line! LOL, Welcome to Utah!
What do you like about the local scene? For most of the people that I know they are more than willing to meet and ride with new people and discover new places to ride. We have some of the best spots to ride depending on the day and then you break out the winch and it is endless. My wife calls me last night that somebody was in the flooded park with a 4 wheeler and railing on a picnic table, I was to late with the camera. If this was you, let’s get this on film!
Who do you ride with? David H., this guy is obsessed with getting to the lake. It seems like anybody with free time he can make time to get to the lake no matter the day. We head out for a morning session to get him back to work early, as I’m walking in the house and my phone is ringing with David saying he got his work stuff done and wants to go back to the lake. Also I try to bum a ride with the Wakeworld Northern Crew sometimes! I want to throw a huge thanks for everybody that made the Monday Crew happen this year!

WakeUtah’s Featured Rider (August): Kolton Barney

Posted on 10 August 2008 by Dewey

WakeUtahs Featured Rider (August): Kolton BarneyKolton Barney is one of those guys who is good at almost everything he does. He is an accomplished Moto Cross rider who is usually top five amongst his intermediate class, with a few podium finishes. Kolton can shred the sloped on a winter board. He has also been known, in his past, to bang on a few drums, winning a few local competitions, including the Utah Talent Competition.

Luckily for WakeUtah, his friends and family, and all the bro’s he rides with, Kolton jumped on a wakeboard a few years back. After taking top honors in the IWA intermediate class last year, Kolton has moved up to the advanced class where his winning streak continues. After a gnarly crash at the Yuba stop, Kolton took care of Saratoga Springs winning first place. He then took 5th at East Canyon and 3rd at the most recent Idaho Boardstock. His winnings include 1st place at Wake in the Woods.

Kolton is continuing to progress and gain his style. He has a huge tantrum, crazy twisted up shifty, a bunch of grab variations, and loves to spin, usually throwing back to back heel and toe 3’s. Kolton is also starting to throw down on the rail scene. He keeps it clean to the end of every rail, even the new 60 foot Delta Res monster, and is now starting to learn a new move every session. Kolton is all ready starting to put the steeze on, way out on the nose and tail.

Kolton is an upbeat person who has a good time out on the water. He is easy to get along with, and loves to take people out on the boat, especially the ladies. Kolton enjoys meeting, riding, and learning from fellow riders, and is more than willing to take anyone out and even teach them a few things. Make sure to keep an eye on Kolton, who will be bringing the awesome to all the local events and rail jams. Introduce yourself or give him a shout and take a session, it will be good times.

Name – Kolton Barney

Age – 18

Sponsors – WakeUtah

Board Set Up – LF Lyman 135 with LF Watson Special Edition Bindings

Hobbies other than wake sports – Moto Cross, Snowboarding, Pretty much anything that involves the outdoors

Biggest Accomplishments – Winning IWA Intermediate Division last year, all my podium finishes this year, but most of all the progression I have had on the water and on the sliders this season

Goals this Season – Keep developing my style by going back to the basics to clean up my tricks, going bigger with a few big floaty 180’s. I’m also working on a heel side front flip

Favorite Pro and Local Riders – Lyman, Greenwood, Murray, Rathy / Marc Glover, Braxton Tomlinson, Brothers Bagley

Favorite Trick to watch and perform – Kgb’s, Tantrum to blind, big floaty tricks with hanging grabs / shifty, spins, big indy tantrum

What is it about wakeboarding? Wakeboarding has a real mellow vibe. It’s all about having a good time with friends hanging out on the boat. All the self progression while riding. It makes you open yourself and you mind. When you go big it feels sick.

What do you like about the local scene? It has introduced me to a great group of friendly people and riders. Everyone feeds off each other and gets ideas from each other. Riding with the local community is making us better riders, and friends.

Who do you ride with? Marc Glover, Colton Brockbank, Ethen Roberts, D.C. Bateman, any and all locals, more everyday, and Dewey the rail man of course

WakeUtah’s Featured Rider (July): Ryan Webster

Posted on 15 July 2008 by omj

WakeUtah’s Featured Rider (July): Ryan WebsterJuly’s featured rider is Ryan Webster, Ryan Webster has been on the scene wakeboarding for a few years and is always progressing, both himself and the sport. An eager rider who does it for the love of wakeboarding, Ryan makes residence in Delta, Utah where he lives on “The Res” with his family who are extremely supportive of not only his wakeboarding but the sport in general. I have been told that once “The Res” is thawed Ryan is out riding, as early as February, take a run off a dock start and finish with a clean run right back where he started.
Ryan competes at the Outlaw division in the IWA, and has placed in the top 3 at all Utah stops so far. The level of intensity that Ryan rides with is hard to match, and if his success is any indicator, Ryan will be going places in wakeboarding.
Dewey and I had the opportunity to go down to Delta recently and install the coolest rail we had in Ryan’s back yard. Ryan admitted that he hasn’t hit rails much, and this beast would lend lots of practice time, but only after a few hits on the 60 footer, Ryan was sliding the whole thing, spinning 180’s and gapping the top like he had been doing it all season.

Name – Ryan Webster
Age -20
Sponsors – Hyperlite, Marine Products, MOM and DAD
Board Set Up – Hyperlite Pulse with Byerly bindings
Hobbies other than wake sports – Duck hunting with my dog Whiskey
Biggest Accomplishments – Associates Degree, 2006 IWA Overall
Goals this Season – Consistently land toe and heel 7’s, crow mobe
Favorite Pro and Local Riders – Pro: AJ Racinelli, Rusty Malinoski. Local: Where to start? Colby Shelton, Mark Glover, Andrew Wallace, Kayden Tomlinson, Braxton Tomlinson, Colton Brockbank, Scott Bagley, Tyler Peterson, Bret Peterson.
Favorite Trick to watch and perform – Huge KGB
What is it about wakeboarding? – I owe it all to my parents to getting me into the sport, they support me in all I do. Wakeboarding is an escape from reality. When I am on the lake it is like time stops, haha and ask Colby Shelton or Andrew Wallace, I am in my own dream world when I am out on the boat. For me, wakeboarding is not about the contests or the moves you can throw, it is a way of life and sharing the sport with other people I think about wakeboarding more than anything else, it’s what gets me through the day.
What do you like about the local scene? – All the riders get along and help push each other to learn new things, the number one most important thing that I like is the fact that we are all friends out there and love doing the same thing. I like how Dewey has been helping Utah get into the wakeboard scene. He has already made a huge impact on Utah riders with rail/winch riding.
Who do you ride with? – I ride with just about anybody who is down, but on a normal day I ride by myself sad, huh? Where is the love?

WakeUtah’s Featured Rider (June): Marc Glover

Posted on 12 June 2008 by Dewey

WakeUtahs Featured Rider (June): Marc GloverMarc Glover is an enthusiastic young rider who is consistently rising amongst the local scene. He has won and placed in countless different events; including placing third, outlaw division, at the most recent IWA stop at Yuba, and first place in the 19 and under category at Idaho’s first rail jam, Wake in the Park, put on by Idaho Watersports. He also took home first prize in the IWA point series, advanced division, last year. Marc is an extremely nice guy who loves the sport of wakeboarding and is always ready to take a pull. Glove is a universal rider who can throw down and progress behind any boat or winch, including my own.

Glove has mad skills and a clean style on the wake and on sliders. Behind the boat, you might first notice his huge raley. Marc likes to get upside down with all sorts of tantrums, backrolls, scarecrows, toe side rolls, roll to reverts, and who know how many more. He can also spin in many different ways; backside 180’s, front and backside 3 heel and toe sides adding a slob and mute grab, a 540 or two, and even a switch 3. It doesn’t stop there, along with all this awesomeness Glove will throw in a grab on many, if not all, of these tricks.

Marc brings the awesome to slider sessions as well. No matter what rail creation he is hitting, whether it be mine, a competition, or a gnarly, Brothers Allphin, home brew set up usually with a huge gap, Glove can throw down something fierce. Clean board and lip slides will usually start Marc’s session. He doesn’t mess around too long before pulling out different 3 combinations, 5’s, and beyond, spinning both ways of course. Then comes the illusive 270 on, and many other stylish moves, and spins.

Check out Marc’s videos, send him a message, then call him up to have a session. With his deep bag of tricks and winning personality you will not be disappointed. Keep an eye on what Marc Glover will be doing this season and beyond. Stay tuned to WakeUtah for all the latest and greatest that will come from this outstanding local rider. – Great job Glove! Keep up the good times.
