UWS Rock Band Contest

Posted on 21 January 2009 by omj

Utah Water Sports took a break from X-Dance to put on a show at their pro shop last Saturday.  A bunch of the new Mastercraft boats were being showed off in their showroom while contestants rocked to their hearts content.

Spectators could check out the new boats and chat with Billy McKee about the new Mastercrafts and the great deals they had in the pre-boat show sale.

Winners of the Rock Band contest walked away with some great winnings, which included a Wake Surfboard, an Obrien Natural Wake Board and bindings and a Slingshot wake board and bindings.

Check out some of the pictures of the event!

Winch Spots

Posted on 10 June 2008 by omj

After having run the Pulldozer winch all last summer out at Deweys Rail I have found a great fondness for winch riding. Last year we took the winch out to some pretty sweet spots. The Alphin Brothers hooked us up with a waterfall winch spot out by Layton which was a great place to do some winch wakeboarding where it has never been done. Later that year Dewey and I took the winch out to Payson lakes, which are “no motor boat” lakes; mostly it’s just inflatable boats for fishermen. We brought along a floater rail and sessioned that for a while. All the people who watched thought it was pretty sweet, except the park hosts who promptly called the Sheriff to put an end to it. The funny thing about it was when the Sheriff showed up, he took one look at what we were doing and said, “they aren’t doing anything illegal” and drove off.

So here is the deal, I want to see your best winch spot idea. I know there are some great spots out there, I have seen a few, but I know with this community we can find some epic locations. If your spot is that epic spot, let’s get a group of people together and hit it, maybe put some rails out there and ride till we the sun comes down.

So here are some guidelines:

1. Look at length, I would say not less than 150 feet but not more than 250 feet total. Keep in mind the pools and rail at the boat show are generally 170 feet total. You don’t want to have to pull the handle too far after each ride.

2. Accessibility, we need a place to put the winch and a place to start. Also keep in mind that the winch is HEAVY! So if we have to haul it up and down hills the spot had better be worth it!

3. Rails, land gaps or drops, always add to the experience. I think one of these is required, or at least a spot for a rail, I think Dewey has some if there is a place for it.

So get out there, snap some shots or some video of that spot and post it, let’s see what we can come up with! Tag it with Winch and I will add it to the “Winch Spots” Album and see what we come up with!

IWA Yuba Competition / Practice Runs

Posted on 09 June 2008 by omj

The practice runs the night prior to the event were a bust, not for lack of riders though, the gusts of wind were horrible, only one rider was able to get out before we called it no good, and they kept blowing till the sun went down. Probably the most beneficial part of having the WakeUtah.com team out there was the ability to chat with an actual judge of wakeboard competitions. If you have ever had questions about your run or what they are looking for the guys who showed up the night before took advantage of that opportunity and learned something that might have given them the edge, Marc Glover was there, he rode in Outlaw for the first time this year and he took 3rd

The day of:

The day didn’t start out ideally, cold and wet, for a wakeboarder wet is ok, but cold, that’s tough! The consolation was that the lake wasn’t too choppy, and other boaters stayed away. Most riders I talked with had only been able to get out and ride 2 or 3 times because of the weather prior to the event, so I was worried about the level of skill I would see, but everyone did fine despite the short warm up season.

The morning was the only sore spot, by 11:30 the sun came out and warmed spectators as riders began their runs. Beginners went first and all did a great job, many finished their runs standing up, they did a great job. Then women’s with Jenacee Jackson first, then a newcomer to the Utah scene from Virginia, Nikki Willhoite. Then finishing out the division was Brook Bagley, all three had stellar runs. There is going to be some good completion on the water from the Women’s division this year.

Intermediate and Advanced divisions both got great water and all had great runs, as the tricks get harder the action gets better. The sun was shining and the spectators were cheering as the riders did their best to compete for the top spots.

As typical competitions go, Mother Nature threw out some wind, and more boats on the water throwing rollers, as Outlaw took the stage. Andrew Wallace volunteered to go first and got the best water, and came out on top with the best run.

From the moves I saw on the water last weekend, I can tell you, it’s going to be a great year, if only the temperature would rise a bit so we can get out and ride some more.

Malibu Demo Day Wrap Up

Posted on 28 April 2008 by James

While the conditions weren’t the best, it was nice to get back in a boat and chill with some friends, on Saturday Taylors Boats did their part in the Malibu Demo Days event. A nice bbq and rides on their 2008 line of boats. Though the weather didn’t cooperate, the out side temp on the lake was 57 degrees, with the high winds blowing white caps on the lake, then to top it off our demo boat driver dipped the bow on the first turn and sent a solid sheet of frigid lake water down on all the passengers, maybe we shouldn’t have told him we were from WakeUtah…

Adam Loumis was the only one brave enough to try out the water, but only after suiting up in a wet suit AND a dry suit. After spending 3 months in Maui he decided he would try surfing behind the boat, and did a pretty good job too, though the water didn’t make it easy to get a consistent speed and a good wake for surfing he gave it his best. These Malibu’s look great, if conditions were better it would have been nice to catch a wake behind that beast, maybe Taylors Boats will be nice and provide another demo day for the members of WakeUtah.com. Here are some pictures of the day.
